Zombie Games On The Sega Dreamcast
The Sega Dreamcast was released in 1998 and for all intents and purposes was a commercial flop. Which is a shame since at the time it came out it was one of the best gaming consoles on the market. I’m not here to talk about that though. This isn’t a gaming site. At least unless it has to do with one thing- zombies! (If you want to learn more about the Dreamcast itself I suggest visiting the Dreamcast Wiki.)
So why am I talking about a dead video game system and the 8 games for it? Because you can still buy them all! Each and every one of them! (Sure some of them might be used…) It’s becoming less uncommon to be able to pickup 8 or more different zombie games on a console but for anyone out there who is a gamer that loves zombies (well your here so you of course love zombies) this is a pretty decent find and compilation!
Dreamcast Console
Well if your going to play the games your going to need the system. If you already have one laying around (they make great over sized paperweights if not being used! Very stylish) than you will need to order one. While these can probably be picked up cheaper used on EBay I would go with a new one myself. Of course I’m an electronics snob and that’s one thing I won’t buy used. You never know when your getting something broken!
NEW consoles are available at Think Geek
Zombie Revenge (originally titled Blood Bullet: The House of the Dead Side Story) – “Think you undid the undead in Dreamcast’s gun-crazy fright fest? Think again. The zombies from House of the Dead 2 are back, and they want revenge for your gun-happy ways. In a change from House of the Dead’s first-person viewpoint, Zombie Revenge places all characters (including hordes of attacking zombified souls) in a third-person camera view.A perfect translation of the arcade game by the same name, Zombie Revenge also offers up an original mode that features a few small differences, including the option to play with powered-up guns or in bare knuckles mode (without the aid of handguns).” Available at Amazon.
House of the Dead 2 – “Direct from the arcades to the Dreamcast, Sega has a sure-fire smash on its hands with this near arcade-quality translation of popular zombie shooter House of the Dead 2. Most fast-action gaming fans will immediately dive into the basic premise of this game: shoot and destroy the zombies that have invaded the creepy haunt known as the Curien Mansion.
For what it’s worth, however, House of the Dead 2 does contain a pretty intriguing plot that moves beyond the simplistic point-and-shoot genre. In addition to the fast-moving action, there are several subplots that shed light on the darker secrets lurking within this eerie, zombie-infested environment. Gameplay can be set to accommodate several skill levels, including easy, medium, and hard game settings.” Available at Amazon. This one though I would highly recommend also picking up a lightgun for. Otherwise it just won’t be nearly as fun.
Evil Dead – Hail to the king – “Square-jawed, smack-talking, shotgun-toting Ash must once again battle evil forces, but this time you take control of the fate of the world! Evil Dead: Hail to the King picks up eight years after the cult-classic trilogy ends. Bruce Campbell, the star of the movie series, lends his vocal talents to the game. It continues the ongoing saga of Ash and the Necronomicon, or the Book of the Dead. Open the Necronomicon, and battle all the Kandarian demons, ruthless deadites, and unspeakable monsters that it can spew out. The game takes place in environments familiar to fans of the films, such as the cabin, the cellar, and the bridge. It contains all of the humor, suspense, action, and gore that made the movies such classics, then adds puzzle-solving aspects to the successful formula. Ash has the remarkable ability to use weapons in both hands simultaneously, so feel free to head down into that cellar and carve yourself a witch. Hail to the King, baby!” Available at Amazon.
Resident Evil: Code Name Veronica – “The first Dreamcast installment in the Resident Evil series, Code: Veronica is “survival horror” at its finest. Unmatched in its ability to convey a persistent feeling of dread–and scare the pants off of you ever so often–this is one of those hard-to-put-down games that will keep you up for several nights on end.
The fourth chapter in the dark Resident Evil epic, Code: Veronica delves further into the machinations of the sinister Umbrella Corporation, once again pitting players against zombies and other horrifying mutations created by Umbrella’s biotechnological viruses. Players begin the game as Claire Redfield, Resident Evil 2’s college-girl-turned-zombie-killer, and later control Chris Redfield, the beefcake cop from the original game. There’s more strategy required here than in the previous games, as Claire’s actions have a direct impact on Chris. For example, playing a trigger-happy Claire that uses every health-restoring item in sight will call for some fancy footwork on the part of brother Chris.” Available at Amazon.
Resident Evil 3 Nemesis – “It’s been just days after the gruesome T-Virus disaster had finally ceased at the mansion’s laboratory in the hills. Because of the revelations made on her journey, Jill Valentine resigned from S.T.A.R.S and attempted her escape from Raccoon City, now in shambles. But to her surprise, it was just the beginning in what seems to be a lose-lose situation after realizing her nightmares weren’t over yet.
Relying on her cunning and survival skills, Jill must put them to the ultimate test against flesh-eating zombies that now penetrate the city streets. She must also face-off against other hideous creatures of the night including bloodthirsty hunters, ferocious hellhounds, and a lumbering Nemesis. Concocted by the shady Umbrella Corporatioin, biotech terror is about to be unleashed once again. This time, however, it won’t go unnoticed.“Available at Amazon.
Resident Evil 2 – “Raccoon City has somehow fallen victim to a zombie outbreak and it’s up to you as either police officer Leon Kennedy, or Claire Redfield (sister to Chris Redfield from RE1), to find out what’s going on. The adventure, which takes place in 3D using pre-rendered backgrounds, drags you through spooky crash sites, abandoned buildings, experiments gone wrong and more — all the while battling undead monstrosities, solving puzzles and, most of all, trying to stay alive. Lots of weapons and other gadgetry allow for some truly disgusting mayhem. RE2 for Dreamcast is exactly the PlayStation game of the same name, just in a higher resolution display mode.. ” Available at Amazon.
The Typing of the Dead – “Typing of the Dead blends horror with a typing tutorial for an original gaming experience. There are several game modes to help you become a terrific typist. Drill mode focuses on different skills, such as typing speed, accuracy, reflex, and special keystrokes. In the boss mode, your battle against each boss emphasizes a different skill, from quick reading and answering to story reading and typing. Two-player modes include cooperative and competitive.” Available at Amazon. Note! Requires a Dreamcast Keyboard to play!
Carrier – The “almost” Zombie Dreamcast game! “While tranporting an extremely dangerous form of life, the aircraft carrier “Heimdall” is attacked by terrorists. The ship transmits a “Mayday” message and then falls silent. Your job is to board the ship and determine what has happened to the ship, crew, and the mysterious life form. Time for some horrific survival! A full 3D adventure that will fully immerse the player in a frightening mystery for which you must find the chilling answers. Multiple levels will challenge you as you seek to unlock the mystery of the giant aircraft carrier Heimdal and its suddenly silent crew. Taking advantage of the exciting capabilities of the Dreamcast system, Carrier sets new standards in the action adventure category.” Available at Amazon.
I actually still have my dreamcast and all the above games I love my dreamcast to this day and STILL play It.
I’m a bit annoyed. Somewhere in the past 3 moves I put my Dreamcast in a box and now am not sure where it is. On the one hand I’m not sure if there is room in my living room to set it up anywhere these days… on the other hand I’m sure I’d find a way!
That sucks!
I actually won a soul calibur competition at an e3 show and won a dreamcast all the games that dreamcast came out with a few hundred!
Which was awesome cause I didn’t have to buy If from the gamestore I worked at at the time lol.
That is a pretty sweet deal 😉
While it sucks on the flipside I don’t really have the time to truly dedicate to all out gaming that I did when I was younger so one system is enough for me at the moment
The dreamcast is amazing and Resident Evil: Code Veronica is my favorite of the above games. Also, I am a die hard resident evil fan and will remain extremely bias when Resident Evil is in the mix. I recently found the Resident Evil Card Game and plan to pick that up too 😀
Haven’t actually played that one. Fortunately the franchise doesn’t seem to be going anywhere so we should be good to go for awhile with new ones 😉
