REVIEW: Hater by David Moody

We, here at Buyzombie.com know that we run a zombie website. We are also aware that Hater is not a zombie novel. David Moody is in fact the great author that brought us the Autumn series, which are zombie novels. David Moody has established himself in the zombie world and will always be welcomed here at Buyzombie.com

Hater is written in first-person. The reader is in the mind of the protagonist, Danny McCoyne. Danny is just an ordinary man; works full time, has a wife and 3 children, and doesn’t get along with his father in law. He is just your average man until that one morning where he started noticing the changes going on in the world around him. In time a few of the people in his community begin to change. They become violent for no reason and attack anyone in their way. Danny’s first encounter happened on his way to work. A well dressed man for no apparent reason attacked an elderly woman. When a crowd gathers around the scene the attacker turns on the bystanders. He punches and kicks into the crowd as if he is fighting for his life. The police get involved and finally subdue the man.

Danny quickly learns that these attacks are not just contained within his town. It’s happening all over the world. The news coverage shows nothing but people attacking other people in a war type scenario. The attackers are given the name Haters. Danny struggles to keep his family safe from the war going on around the world but once the Haters reach his doorstep, and he learns no where is safe. The only thing he can do is join the war against the Haters. But in reality who is attacking who? Is it the Haters who are attacking the unchanged? Or are the unchanged the real Haters?

I can not express how much I loved this book. It had everything I could possible want in a novel. The action was magnificent and the violence was nice and gory. Everything was filled in with so much depth that I could visualize everything happening. Danny McCoyne is the perfect main character. Moody does a magnificent job bringing his characters to life. Everyone could really relate to him. The relationship he has with his family is spot on. It reminds me of dealing with my daughter. The book made me laugh multiple times. One example is when Danny locks himself in the restroom and thinks about escaping his children by exiting the window. I loved it, I’ve thought about doing that myself. Hater is a well written masterpiece and I recommend it to any horror fan.

There is an audio book available. I have listened to it twice and I can honestly say that it is one of the best audio books I’ve heard. It is narrated by Gerard Doyle and he does a wonderful job bringing Danny McCoyne’s character to life. I also recommend the audio book.

Dog Blood the sequel to Hater is due out later this year. I have spoken to David Moody and he is working on getting me an advance copy to review. Be sure to check back at a later time for that review it.
