REVIEW: The Zombie Survival Guide: Complete Protection from the Living Dead by: Max Brooks

This will be a short review for this book because there isn’t a whole lot to say about this book, considering my knowledge resides more with story driven zombie fiction. The Zombie survival guide is a witty, humorous and satirical piece of writing that will leave you in stitches. Max Brooks writes a tongue in cheek version of a guide that jokingly mocks other guides with its use of language and jargon. He makes open statements about some political aspects of the zombie apocalypse and he just about covers every subject to think of when it comes to zombies and doctrine to surviving a disaster.

This book shows a façade similar to that of other guides, but he portraits it in such a way as to show an underlying joke to it. He makes references to modern almost comical associations to Night of the Living Dead and Romero’s works without making a direct connection. The writing of this book is witty as it is a perfect reflection of how to appropriately reflect tone. Overall, this is the staple book for any zombie aficionado.

I have heard plenty of remarks stating that this books information is inaccurate, and these people are mostly gun enthusiasts. The book is informative but its not meant to be a full on guide to survival, it is meant more to be a Parody of zombie popularity, the ridiculous guides that are on shelves and even modern political quirks. This book is humor intended and should be analyzed as such, it is one of the funniest things I have ever read, and I would recommend this as the starting point for anybody wanting to get into zombie literature. It was one of those books that helped me get into zombie literature. (Along with David Wellington’s Monster Island)
