So Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Zombies has been sitting in my pile of unread books for a few months now. I’ll be honest, Guides to zombies grew old. I’ve read so many survival guides and random guides that I didn’t want to take the time to go through what Matt Mogk put together. Matt and I run in some of the same zombie fanatic circles so while we don’t generally speak I know who he is and he was kind enough to send me a copy of his book to review.

First let me say that Matt Mogk is the Founder and Head of the Zombie Research Society so it’s the only reason that I wanted to personally read through this and not have one of our other reviewers take a look at it. The main problem with guides like this I have to say is that they are dated. While it was just released and written by someone who was in the know – it still has a shelf life on it when it comes to up to date material.

Now that I’ve gotten all of that off of my chest you might be thinking I’m going to be a downer on the rest of this book. As much as I would do that for the vast majority of guides out there I have to say for anyone who wants to know the history of the modern zombie this is currently the only book that I have read that properly does it justice.

I’m willing to go on the record that of all of the history of the undead books that tackle the modern day zombie if you have to pick up one you need to pick this one.

It doesn’t cover every movie or novel that has come out. It’s a little lax on covering the video games that have sprung up from our favorite horror genre. What it does though is give you every major highlight of the undead. It shows how they have evolved. It also gives a scientific and well thought out premise of what a real undead outbreak would be like. How zombies would most likely act and what to do before just assuming they would react as they do in theory, movies, or books.

It’s full of all of the facts about how rise of Romero’s zombie brought our favorite aspect of zombie culture and present them in a straight and entertaining way. It gives us the highlights of the most famous zombies to date and focuses on why they are so popular. It does so in a format that is not dry and boring and will enhance anyone’s knowledge from the casual zombie fan to the largest enthusiast.

This is a well researched novel that covers exactly how zombies have grown to be the cultural phenomenon that they are today.
