Plaguesville USA is not the average book about the Apocalypse! While reviewing books for a Zombie Website one would figure that a book coming from Permuted Press would be about Zombies, but this book isn’t about that.

To be honest, I kept waiting for the zombie hordes to make an appearance.

They never showed their faces! But, I can say this much Jim LaVigne does a fantastic job in telling us a story about a post apocalyptic world where there are not zombies. This book reminded me more of The Road or something out of Mad Max.

The premise of the story is a road team from the CDC that goes across country to find a person who has the virus in them “they call people who succumb to the virus the sick”, and then to deliver the person to San Francisco.

During their travels they come across motorcycle gangs, a cannibal cult of religious fanatics, government types fighting against other factions, underground living mutants, and natural disasters. They get caught in a number of situations where they have to escape. The bottom line, this is a great read about survival in a post apocalyptic world “even though there are no zombies :(”

What you will find is a reasonably priced book, great storytelling, good editing, and a book that doesn’t let you down.

Dr. Justin Kaes is the researcher that we spend a good majority of the book dealing with, so a lot of it is told through his eyes. The female protagonist is in one of the gangs, The Bloodclaws and her story “without giving too many spoilers” Teresa. There is a cantankerous old man who they get the pathogens from named Mr. Lampert. The story revolves around these characters and their ordeals in this post apocalyptic world.

All in all it is a pretty good read, you will not be let down if you go in with open eyes and know that it isn’t a zombie novel.
