day-1

What’s Day 1 About?

“The News said “Day 1” actually started on the fifth of August. A Tuesday.”

The world falls apart around a small town police chief as a new disease spreads through the country.

Our Day 1 Review

Lindsay Moretti’s Day 1 doesn’t break new ground in what it gives us. Don’t get me wrong I’m not by any means bashing the novella in the slightest. She does give us a solid story told in a journal format that you will read through rather quickly. The quickness will partially be due to the length (I did say it was a novella) and partially due to the fact that you just won’t put it down and fly right through it.

We follow the police chief of a small town whose name is Anthony King. We actually don’t know a lot about Anthony until the end of the narrative as he is intent on telling the reader the build up of how the world fell apart around him.

He tells the story of how the outbreak grew in his area (days before the governments of the world would officially claim the problem actually started.) He tells of the horrors he had seen and had to commit and in the telling it honestly felt real. The way he has to describe both strangers and friends as they turn into zombies works amazingly well. In fact every way that a zombie is described in this one is rendered in horrible perfection in my mind.

You could see events playing out in real life exactly how they did on page and wouldn’t be surprised if that was a world ending scenario.

Finally he tells the tale of what he and his wife have done to stay alive and what brings us to where we end the story. It’s a tale or horror, survival, love, and loss. It’s also a story that I completely recommend. Day 1 is a story that truly tries to describe how the zombie apocalypse came and how to survive in it. It is done in a journal format but just the kind of format that works.

Now I won’t lie to you, even as a short the story has a few errors. Some of the spelling and grammar can be forgiven as it’s told through the eyes of non-writer. I get that. What I didn’t get was how some of the language used clearly didn’t fit in with the person telling the story.

Aside from some errors in language though there wasn’t any real complaints. This is a solid (and quick) read that’s worth picking up.
