The undead are in business.

The undead are conventioning.

Among the tens of thousands descending on the Pennsylvania Convention Center from May 30 to June 2 for Wizard World Philadelphia Comic Con were heroes, aliens, and, of course, zombies. Lots of zombies. With three stars of “The Walking Dead” on hand for autographs, photos and a 45 minute Q&A (more on that soon), and an exclusive Issue #1 of “The Walking Dead” with cover art by Julian Totino Tedesco free for all paying congoers, the 2013 con was a big event for zombie fans, and you could find the undead in every corner. There were zombie comic books, prints, and the ever-popular “zombify yourself” tables, where for about $25, a comic book artist will draw a portrait or caricature of you, only undead. There were small companies such as Resurrect (left), selling organic shampoos and soaps for both the infected and survivors (look for a full review of the products soon); and big companies like Hyundai, who partners with Zombie Mud Run and displayed a custom car called “De-Animator” covered with zombies, a “zombie transport” truck, and a carnival game with zombie prizes (or you could just fill out a form for a free “I Don’t Brake for Zombies” license plate frame). Romper Zombie, one of the convention’s sponsors, had a huge display of their grown-up toys, including a larger-than life Romper Zombie figure. This was where you could meet the one and only Tom Savini and photograph yourself on the bloody couch. Fright Factory offered free photos with its giant undead ghoul, which walked around the floor scaring children. And this list doesn’t even including the many zombie toys, t-shirts, pins, badges, jewelry, glassware and more on sale in the vendor area.  I’ve rounded up some of my favorite pics from the weekend — keep an eye out for posts about the zombie comics we picked up, product reviews, and a dedicated “Walking Dead” panel post!
