Our Waking The Zed Review

ML Katz poses the question, if you could do away with death would you? Her character Dr. Ada Klein absolutely plans to and won’t let anything stand in her way. A brilliant doctor who has made millions off of past research has since started Future Faith Cryonics.

It’s goal?

To freeze the wealthy who are sick or dying until a cure for their disease or death itself can be found.

Enter Pam. She’s the main character and is an intern at Future Faith. While working here will look amazing on her resume she hates everything about her job. Dr. Ada Klein is demanding and disrespectful and on top of that she got into medicine to help the living, not babysit the dead. For all intents and purposes that is exactly what she’s doing as she monitors cryogenics capsules.

Boring? Not so much when the night she plans on quitting her boss storms in and tells her to help monitor a patient. A patient? That’s right. Ada believes she has discovered the cure for death and is ready to find out.

I’m sure you can see where this is going but if not I’ll spell it out to you. Things go wrong. Horribly horribly wrong. Her cure for death is in all actuality the birth of the zombie virus. Pam, Ada, and another are all able to escape the hordes of undead and barely make it to a safe room. From there Ada calls her contacts at the military who come to clean up her mess.

They don’t do the best of jobs.

While most of the zombies are taken care of Ada and a few infected are brought back to the military base. A quarantine is attempted but fails as no one believes the extent of what is happening.

This novella gets my one complaint I always have for well written novellas. It’s too short. I’d love to know more of what happens in the world and find out of they are able to contain the spread of the infection or if the world as we know it is at an end. There is some solid character development, plot, and pacing in this one.

A quick read but a good one and I highly support picking this one up!
