What’s ‘The Estuary’ About? (WW2 Zombies? Close but not exactly)
Journalist John Pender has returned to his home town of Whiteshead to rekindle his marriage. Ex-British Intelligence Officer Dave Johnson has arrived to isolate himself after his fiancée is murdered during a mission that went terribly wrong. But excavations for the new shopping centre unearth a mysterious contagion that threatens to throw their lives into chaos. Now the residents of Whiteshead are trapped within a quarantine zone with the military on one side and ravenous hordes on the other. Escape is no longer an option. Far out in the mouth of the estuary a small keep sits forlornly surrounded by an apron of jagged rocks. This refuge has always been unassailable, a place of myth and legend that has grown in folklore through the years. Now, it’s the survivors’ only hope of sanctuary. But there are thousands of flesh-eating infected between them and the keep and time is running out …
Our ‘The Estuary’ Review
Derek Gunn’s ‘The Estuary’ is by no means a new novel but if you haven’t had a chance to read it yet you should by no means hold that against it. Derek Gunn always tends to put together a pretty fantastic story and having just had a chance to finally read ‘The Estuary’ I can guarantee you that this one is no different.
The story takes place in a sleepy little Irish seaside town. We follow through with quite a few characters however the mains ones revolve around a journalist, his family, and an ex-British secret agent. There are a slew more but that is our primary set of characters whose eyes we see through.
We start off seeing the beginning of what appears to be a terrifying Nazi mission near the end of World War 2. Their mission was to deliver a massive weaponized attack on England by submarine. Quickly it is apparent that what these horrifying men were up to never happened. What was the end result? We’re not sure. That is until the journalist’s son trips over something while playing at the beach.
He’s accidentally located one of these subs and after a day is spent by local townsmen who are out of work digging it up they open it up to find that they’ve accidentally just released an ancient chemical weapon on their little town. One that will not only kill them but reanimate their corpses as flesh eating monsters.
Yes ladies and gentlemen the zombie apocalypse has arrived, courtesy of Nazi experiments from the past.
We follow a group of the townsfolk as they try to get to freedom. Unfortunately the government is made aware of what is happening here and out of the blue no one is allowed to leave. In fact all of the civilians are being forced to stay in this quarantined area and they are clearly willing to use force to keep them there.
There is a lot going on here with the variety of characters but if you are focusing on the main ones it’s not too many to confuse you or get annoying.
A fun read, some great zombies, a well written plot and characters – ‘The Estuary’ is one you should absolutely take the time to pickup and read!
