Generally, children these days just aren’t as shielded from the horrors of the outside world as they were in the past. However, if I was, say, nine or ten and woke to find that my violently ill-looking, incoherent Mom was suddenly eating the mailman’s face off…I’m not sure I’d be able to handle it. All the same, the minds behind upcoming “Tween-Teen Horror/Comedy/Drama” web series Our Zombie Mother apparently think it’s about damn time to acquaint today’s ten and up set with the flesh eating undead so I for one am definitely curious to see how they tackle the subject matter.
Led by the team of Patrick Griffin of Griffin Studios LA and Committed Artists Entertainment along with Maria Olsen of MOnsterworks66, the pilot episode features a young brother and sister waking to find that their mother has suddenly become a zombie. They must then figure out a way to deal with the resulting situations that arise such as perhaps the everyday loads of laundry and homework help needs to keeping their mom from eating the neighborhood pets or severing appendages in the home. I mean, I’m just guessing here. The short teaser trailers released thus far seem to exude very much an R. L. Stine’s Goosebumps or Erie Indiana vibe in which evidently there will be much more laughs and thoughtful intrigue than brain eating and carnage. The web series features Maria Olsen (whom you may recognize from her previous role as Mrs. Dodds / The Fury in Fox’s Percy Jackson and The Olympians: The Lightning Thief) as the zombie mother alongside real life brother and sister Insidious 2’s Tyler Griffin and Naomi Griffin as her zombie wrangling children Jon and Wendy.
Though experienced in scoring film and television, this will be a first as far as directing for Patrick Griffin. In addition to directing, he’s also sole creator. The concept grew out of the existing interest he perceives in today’s more intelligent kids who are looking for some scares and intrigue but unable to view most of the genre’s material due to the gore and sex that often comes with it. “Fun stories can involve the whole family without being overly silly and chills and thrills can be added without being graphic and gory,†he states. It seems to me like that’s going to be a pretty steep pile of decaying bodies to climb but here’s hoping he can make it happen. You never know, after all, where there are brainsssss, there’s a way.
