Whether you are a die-hard zombie fan or simply love the horrifying Halloween spirit, creating a zombie apocalypse attraction takes some careful planning. To ensure your zombie attraction isn’t a flop (or reminiscent of Warm Bodies), consider including these five hauntingly scary apocalyptic venues—you may want to grab your shotgun or machete for this one.
- 1.    Shopping Mall
There is something about shopping malls after dark that inspires the horrific in our imaginations. So what better setting for a realistic zombie apocalypse attraction?
Fill your space with lifeless mannequins, cracked fountains, squeaky children’s rides (i.e. the mini merry go rounds and bouncing cars on pedestals), and storefronts complete with outdated sales and a disheveled display.
As your guests walk through the ghostly halls and among the racks of dusty clothing, send your zombies out for a midnight snack in the food court. You’re bound to get some good screams.
- 2.   Gas Station
Gas stations are excellent venues to include in your zombie apocalyptic world. After a zombie invasion, most gas stations will probably look a little worse for wear as people undoubtedly mobbed the pumps for fuel to see them across the border or get them through a winter holed up in their homes.
For good measure, include some rusted or broken down cars in the lot or by the pumps. Guests can use their imaginations to draw their own conclusions about what terrible fate befell the previous owners of those forlorn vehicles.
You may also want to have a vacant convenient store with the pumps. You can add an ATM machine by the door that is blinking with an error or broken into, with lone bills fluttering on the ground for added effect. (You can find ATM machines for sale online—which may be a good idea to have for the swarms of people who will be fighting to get into your awesome zombiefied attraction).
- 3.   Deserted Warehouse
No zombie apocalypse is complete without a good old-fashioned deserted warehouse. These creepy buildings really raise the bar in the horror department. For dramatic effect, go for a warehouse with haunting machinery. I personally prefer an abandoned meat factory, because you can add some nice chains hanging from the ceiling as well as nasty looking meat hooks (that were used to hang the meat). Plus, it seems like a fitting location for a few zombies to hang out—because of the factories propensity for blood and slaughter, you know. Make sure your zombies rustle the chains as they come out to get the guests. Nothing like rattling chains to get your blood pressure up!
- 4.   Boarded Home
A boarded-up home is, of course, a zombie apocalypse necessity. Take your guests through the vacant home, reassuring them that the zombies have long since moved on (as well as the former occupants of the home) and that they will be safe there for the time being.
You could even corral them into a bedroom or in the root cellar where they can cower in fear as they hear the dull thuds of the now-zombie family trying to bang down the door to gorge themselves on brains. Nom nom nom.
- 5.   Corn Field
Finally, everyone loves a good zombie corn field. For some reason, zombies seem to love emerging from the tall stalks, lumbering lamely towards their prey. Grab your torch and pitchfork for this one and get ready for a wild ride as guests try to navigate their way out of the corn maze before the zombies catch them.
With these five locations, your attraction is sure to reek of a post-apocalyptic zombie world.

In addition to the great locations, I’d also suggest an laboratory: it could be either ground zero or a place where scientists tried to study the zombies.
Great tip, Paul! Laboratories are great zombie venues. Hospitals and junkyards are a couple other places I thought of too that add to that spooky apocalypse effect 🙂
