What’s ‘Make a Wish’ About?

Michelle’s husband is dying of cancer in a world where zombies are part of the equation. Maybe with a little ingenuity she can keep him around.

Note: This is an extremely short story.

Our ‘Make a Wish’ Review

Make a Wish is a short story about two people, Michelle and Mike in the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse. But, this is not your ‘average’ zombie apocalypse; it’s more of an inconvenience than a total global breakdown. Sure, there are some services that are disrupted and stores that were normally open 24 hours are now only open during the day time, but for the most part, the Zeds only come out at night. Michelle notices these changes but they don’t really affect her all that much as she spends most of her time taking care of Mike who is suffering with cancer.

As times get tight, and not just with the zombies roaming around, Michelle comes up with an idea that has some merit. If she could get Mike infected with the zombie virus he could live forever and not be partially bed ridden with cancer.

Nice idea. But, without proper follow through and long term research, you just know something bad is going to happen. Michelle plans it out, gets the material she needs and infects poor Mike. The end result is not exactly what she had planned. Sure, Mike is animated and loosely what one could refer to as ‘alive’ but he’s not the epitome of conversation or quite as loving as he once was.

Make a Wish is an interesting short story and one that would be right at home inside an anthology of related subject matter. Shauna Klein’s writing style is crisp, clear, and to the point. The characters are developed as the story moves along at a fairly brisk pace. Make a Wish would make a fine addition to any zombie genre fan library.
