What’s Our Zombies, Ourselves About?
Vivianne White is an EMT living in Marin struggling to keep together her fragile marriage. She feels that duty is a value more important than happiness, so she stays with her husband David in order to please her parents and God. However, her husband comes home one day irritated from a day of work as a doctor at a local hospital. He lists some strange symptoms of the patients, having no idea what caused the problems of the all-male victims.
Thinking it is strange but not putting too much thought into it, they drive in their car to a friend’s house. While traveling through the forest, they encounter a horror that is not of this world.
Our Zombies, Ourselves Review
I hate to say it but I really feel that the cover was the best part of ‘Our Zombies, Ourselves’ by Cory Nickolatos. At 26 pages it’s understandable why the first chapter shows up as free. I wouldn’t go so far as to say it’s bad but I just could not get drawn into the story on this one.
We open the story with Vivian who is stuck in a horrible relationship with her husband. While neither party is a positive factor in this relationship – he’s clearly worse off. The two fight, partially reconcile, and end up agreeing to goto a dinner with friends.
Great! A way back to a ‘healthy’ relationship (that they both really should have gotten out of) until he hits someone on the way there. Only the person he killed doesn’t stay dead (and most likely wasn’t alive to begin with.)
That’s right we have the introduction to a zombie outbreak. The story ends shortly after this point and honestly I don’t feel emotionally invested enough in either of the two characters to want to continue. It’s a shame, Cory’s writing style really isn’t bad I just couldn’t feel any interest in the characters as they were presented. The woman was too wishy washy and weak with how she went back and forth with her husband. The husband? Just a douchebag.
So. I’d like to see more of Cory’s work down the line and with zombies – just not with these characters.
