Frank Darabont is suing AMC over ‘The Walking Dead’s success being orchestrated in such a way that it would not be profitable for his run of the show in order to block him from any residual profits of the show that he should be entitled to. At least, that’s what the lawsuit claims according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Darabont’s lawsuit is the latest in a long line of so-called “vertical integration†cases in Hollywood that arise when the producer of a TV show also distributes it via an affiliated entity that pays a license fee to be shared with talent. License fees are supposed to be negotiated between producers and distributors to reflect the fair market value of a given series. When it was clear that Walking Dead was a runaway hit, AMC then provided a proposal in February 2011 based on “an unconscionably low license fee formula†designed to ensure that the show would never be in profit, according to the suit.
If this allegation is true it’s clear that once again AMC is screwing over Darabont after having already removed him from the show he made so successful. What do you think? Has the creator of the hottest show in television been unfairly treated here or is this a quick grab for cash? From what’s been reported so far I’m on the side of Darabont but we all know that not all of the details ever get reported.
