What’s ‘Coldbrook’ About?

Coldbrook is a secret laboratory located deep in Appalachian Mountains. Its scientists had achieved the impossible: a gateway to a new world. Theirs was to be the greatest discovery in the history of mankind, but they had no idea what they were about to unleash.

With their breakthrough comes disease and now it is out and ravaging the human population. The only hope is a cure and the only cure is genetic resistance: an uninfected person amongst the billions dead.

In the chaos of destruction there is only one person that can save the human race.

But will they find her in time?

Our ‘Coldbrook’ Review

What happens when you mix science fiction with horror? Not just horror but the zombies that we love? Well you get an amazingly fresh tale of zombies told through the genius that is Tim Lebbon. Now I didn’t realize that I was familiar with Lebbon’s work until after I had put this down as I had previously read his ‘The Cabin in the Woods’ novelization as well as stint on ‘Hellboy’ so was quite surprised initially with how much I enjoyed his work (not realizing that I was already a fan.) I was such a fan that I will just go out and say it now:

This has been one of the most refreshing takes on the zombie genre in years!

The novel follows as a group of scientists in the ‘Coldbrook’ facility that will change the course of humankind as we know it from their latest breakthrough. They have created a portal to an alternate Earth. Only on the other side of the portal the zombie apocalypse has already happened and there are flesh eating monsters as far as the eye can see. Of course, one of them just happens into our world because why wouldn’t it?

The characters are all well written and feel fully flushed out. In fact they are some of the most grounded and believable characters I have read in quite some time for being able to survive in a world gone so wrong. There are many that you are introduced to but there are three that will be the main focus as the story progresses which include a scientist who isn’t entirely sure what he’s seeing is real and questions his own sanity (whose to say he hasn’t lost his mind and is just murdering innocent people in a fit of insanity?), a family man who is largely responsible for what happens and yet is doing all he can to save his family and a single woman that they are doing everything to find before she succumbs to the disease within her as locked within her genes could be the only salvation that humanity has.

One thing American readers may notice is that there are a few words that fall into the British category but even with that there are no complaints. It’s a solid book and a quick read. This is a zombie novel you can suggest to non-zombie fans that enjoy horror and/or science fiction lovers who won’t get bogged down by the the undead. They are there but the flesh and meat of the story really will appeal to anyone.
