I totally think this would have worked better if it was labeled “The Zombfather” or something similar. Still the concept is awesome for anyone who likes the undead and… yeah. Maybe with an undead Godfather pic on there. Conceptually though it’s pretty damn awesome.

Popcap under EA has yet to prove that they can still pull off great games, and turning PvZ into such an obvious cash cow so quickly combined with the news about the “free to play” iOS exclusive PvZ 2 have me a bit worried. However, I do admit that I am intrigued by Garden Warfare. I’m not sold yet, but I’ll settle for “cautiously optimistic.”

Garden Warfare is slated for Spring 2014 and will be coming to Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC.

When Zombies Attack! is a zombie dice game where you take the role of a poor, pitiful soul running from a horde of hungry zombies. It immediately conjures up memories of Zombie! Run for your Lives! In theme, at least. However, while they do share some elements they are different games.

The dice are made from fairly standard material. They’re black with rounded edges and green ink (or paint or whatever it is) for the indents. Also included are the rules, printed on a nice, sturdy, glossed card. The art on the card isn’t amazing, but I really like it for some reason, I’m not sure what it is exactly. Also included is a dice bag just large enough to fit the dice into. The dice bag is that kind of cheap faux velvet, or whatever it is, that you find everywhere. Personally, I can’t stand that stuff. It’s like the tactile version of nails across the fingerboard. I hate this stuff, but it’s EVERYWHERE. That’s why I’m glad my wife makes dice bags out of chainmail.

Anyway, the game is very simple. You start with 16 dice and divvy them up among the players. I’ve found that three or four players is best. Fewer players than that feels like too much dice for everyone, and more players than that gives everyone too few dice. Then in turns everyone rolls their dice. Each die represents a single zombie chasing you. If you roll the biohazard, that means that zombie is still chasing you. The gravestone means that you killed that zombie and you put them into your graveyard. The walking zombie means that the zombie wandered off somewhere else. You then choose to either put them in the quarantine zone (where they are chasing nobody) or in front of another player. If you roll nothing but biohazard symbols (yes, even if you’ve only got one die left) then you get all of the dice in the quarantine, since the zombies there start chasing after you. If there are no zombies in the quarantine, you take the zombies in your graveyard instead. First person to start a turn with no zombies chasing them wins. (There are also additional, optional rules, that you may or may not wish to implement.)

Very simple rules, really and that does make the game play fast… Usually. I’ve played a few games where it seems that everyone has just one die left and nobody could ever roll anything but biohazard. On the other hand, I’ve played a couple games where the first person to play gets rid of all their zombies on their first roll, which gives them a big advantage. In the end, it’s one of those games that’s very dependent on the group you’re playing with. A good group gets some good-natured competition going, while a less-good group will probably try to “play nice” and not get much accomplished.

Bottom Line: When Zombies Attack is another one of those games that I classify as break-the-ice party games. They’re meant to be played with a small-ish group of people, finished in a few minutes, and played a few times in a row as a way to break the ice. The times When Zombies Attack works it does what it’s trying to do reasonably well. However, I hesitate to recommend it. It’s got nice components and isn’t a bad game. And with the right group it can be fun. But there are better games out there that fill the same niche.

The Harlem Shake took the Internet by storm. While that’s not something we really care about here what we DO care about is one of the zombies from Plants vs Zombies cutting loose in the PopCap offices doing the Harlem Shake! I’d have to say if there ever was a zombie outbreak I’d hate to be in the PopCap office when it happened. They would have no clue it wasn’t their employees doing their thing… Poor bastards.

Warning: Impending Zombie Doom

A well-labeled situation is a well-handled situation, and when it comes to the inevitable zombie apocalypse, the collapse of civilization would go a lot smoother if non-zombies would communicate with each other effectively. Think about it. If there were a sudden outbreak of nom-happy citizens, the courteous thing to do would be to calmly inform all those that hadn’t had their eyes eaten to keep calm and aim for the head.

As a functioning, active member of a fallen society, it is your duty to visually warn any possibly unaware neighbor or fellow city-dweller that it is a terrible idea to provide your own flesh, or the flesh of a close family member, to the ravenous cannibals. Even more so, why not warn those crossing the street to watch for the walking dead, as they look both ways before fleeing. It’s called respect, and none of us will survive any mass extinction without just a little bit of it.

As for the trailer itself, it’s got plenty of good and bad going for it. The visuals are amazing, and the hordes of zombies are absolutely enormous. However, what’s with all of the brown and black? There are times where I seriously have trouble seeing what’s going on, and it’s not just the trailer. I saw some gameplay footage as well and there were parts that didn’t take place in dark rooms but it was so hard to make out details that they might as well have.  Here’s a tip to developers: Monochromatic color palettes aren’t very easy on the eyes.

Hopefully a bit of color gets added to an otherwise cool-looking game. We’ll see if it lives up to its legacy.

Our The Eagle has Reanimated Review

Without stretching too far into the realm of science fiction it’s truly hard to think of a way on how we can get zombies in space. With how rare humanity gets up there we can realistically not come up with a ton of ways to make it work.

What about though if we take an alternate look at history? That’s exactly what Tony Schaab has done here. Set in an alternate world where George Romero’s classic ‘Night of the Living Dead’ was reality the first moon landing went a little differently and that’s the tale we get to enjoy. My only complaint? We didn’t get to enjoy it that long as it came to a rather abrupt end due to originally being a short. The Eagle has Reanimated is an absolutely fun zombie themed tale that blends perfectly with the alternate Earth concept.

This is one that could probably be turned into a full length novel if it brought in a few more aspects of the time period but falling short of that it was still a fun read! (Really when the complaint is that a story wasn’t long enough that never earns the true meaning of complaint in my book.)

We start out with parts of the world having some kind of a plague but a lack of exactly what is happening is being held in by the media. Unlike today where everyone is able to be jacked in 24 hours a day this was still an age where people relied on television and newspapers to get their news and when it wasn’t being reported there wasn’t much you could do about it aside from hear rumors and conjecture.

There are hints of people working at NASA just leaving or disappearing. Rumors of problems across the country. The space launch though has to go on. We were in a race against Russia and with all of problems in our own country it was imperative that the United States be the first country to make it to the moon.

It’s pretty fun to watch the space flight unfold while we also get all of the hints on what is really going on. Lightly placed in at the beginning just as in the original Night of the Living Dead when things come to a head they really come at full force.

The launch goes as expected up through the moon landing. The problem is when we first step out on the moon one of the undead were apparently stuck on the bottom of the lander. When NASA learns of what happened there is a subtle nod to the rumor that the entire landing was a hoax when they mention to get the film crew ready.

Let’s just say things go down hill from there and leaves it with an ending that would be absolutely amazing to see play out onscreen. It wouldn’t surprise me if the scene he painted at the end inspired the entire story with how perfect it was. Tony has truly knocked it out of the ballpark with this one and as mentioned above my only wish would be for this one to have been longer.

OZombie is coming. What is it? OZombie is the next game from American McGee’s Spicy Horse Games. Any classic PC gamer is going to remember them as the makers of the Alice series. The game itself will take place in the world of Oz (hence the name) though doesn’t say if it takes place in the world of Alice that they have previously created. It will feature all of the familiar characters of Dorothy, Toto, Lion, and Tin Man though. It will also feature the Scarecrow who… if he only had a brain… might be on the side of good.

One guess where the zombie menace is going to come from.

Missing music from the past? Vinyl still lives! (even if it’s in an undead state.) I love the look on this one and am actually half tempted of trying to track down the artist and get permission to use it on any of our music themed posts for the rare ones we don’t have art for.

Many people say that Vinyl is dead, this t-shirt shows that you don’t believe that. It’s a zombies arm raising a broken vinyl from the earth as a symbol of Vinyl being brought back to life. This was created as a logo for a company I named ‘Revinyl’ as part of a university project.
