REVIEW: The Ties That Bind

Well, I honestly can say that when I put this film into the DVD player I thought it would be a feature length but I was surprised to see it was a short film… but it was one of the best independent short films I have seen. Hell, I even had to check and make sure I didn’t skip over anything. (editor’s note: Yes I completely forgot to tell Rick this was a short.)

The story, from what I am told, is based off of a short story about a husband who is in love with his wife even after she was turned into a zombie. He tries to help her remember him and make her feel love but it proves to be wasted. There is a flashback that retells what has happened.

What I really liked about this movie is the emotion that drives this movie; the husband truly loves his wife, but since she is a zombie she is incapable of feeling emotions again… but he doesn’t give up. I don’t want to spoil anything, but at the end, he hears her true self and that proves to be a big mistake. What I also enjoyed is that you can create a whole back-story to their relationship just by the flashback in the movie. This is what I love about zombie movies, the emotional impact.

Another great thing that I enjoyed, in a slightly different way, is the wife being a zombie. This movie kind of turns the zombie mythology upside down, how so? She is talking and is conscious of what she is saying… unless she is still turning into one but normally you don’t see that level of brain activity. But what I did not like so much was the design for the zombie look, I’m not a big fan of a gray face and black rings around the eyes, although I do understand on a restricted budget it is necessary but I would like to see some kind of skin dehydration. That is my ONLY complaint and clearly a preference.

So, If you like really well crafted zombie shorts, this is a film that I strongly urge you to watch. I had a fun 20 minutes watching it and I do not regret it.
