REVIEW: You Are So Undead To Me by Stacey Jay

Without a doubt this teen book is the hardest I’ve had to admit that I loved. If you have not seen this book then you must not be a book fan. It’s everywhere, at every book store, at supermarkets, and even Wal-Mart has it. No matter what store you see the book in it is always under the young reader section. I never had interest in the book until I took a quick look at the description. I became interested so I bought it to review. Stuart has told me he needs variety so a sappy teenage zombie romance it is.

[Editor’s note: I told Lyle no such thing. He’s using me as an excuse to indulge in his love of tween romance horror novels since he can’t bring Twilight home. -Stu]

Zombies are real but the public does not know they exist. There is a secret organization whose sole purpose is to help the undead find a way back to their grave. Megan Berry is one of these ‘Settlers’. She is a 15 year old sophomore who lost her Settler powers years ago but they have suddenly returned. She is haunted by memories of the night where she was almost eaten by reanimated corpses. There is no infection that turns someone into a zombie but reanimated corpses will eat every last bit of you.

On the night of Megan’s first date with Josh, the cutest senior in high school, a zombie stumbles onto her porch. That is when she realizes that her powers have returned. With the fear of begin discovered as a Settler she cancels her date with Josh to send the zombie back to its grave. It has been so long since she has performed spells so she makes mistakes and the zombie is sent running back to its grave leaving an arm behind. Megan quickly stuffs the arm in a bag and chases after the undead. When she reaches the gravesite Megan is met by an old friend. Ethan was someone she had forgotten when her powers left. Now that they have returned she remembers him. Ethan is also a Settler and was sent to be Megan’s mentor and body guard.

Someone in Megan’s high school is using black magic to raise the dead. The attacks begin to circle towards poor Megan. First they attack her homecoming dates but then the reanimated corpses attack her. She does not know who is behind the black magic but she quickly creates her list of suspects. With someone sending flesh eating monster to torment her life Megan decides to fights back and goes searching for the culprit.

I really do hate admitting it but I genially enjoyed this book. I am a 24 year old male zombie reviewer, so this is not the type of book I would expect to like. In all honesty I wanted to review this book to annoy Stuart but sadly it backfired. Say what you want about me but I am a fan of this book and the author. The character of Megan is very annoying just like every 15 year old girl I’ve ever talked to. They all speak fast and care about the strangest things. Stacey Jay, who is a wonderful person by the way, did a wonderful job mimicking everything a 15 year old girl would say and do. The plot and the ideas in are wonderfully thought out. Nothing went unanswered. I cannot say anything bad about this book other then it is meant for teenage girls and I liked it. I still do not know why I enjoyed it so much but I did. If you would like to think outside the box and try a new type of zombie story then you would enjoy You Are So Undead to Me.

There is also an audiobook and I have had the opportunity to listen to it. I strongly recommend it. The voice actor, Jessica Almasy, brought the character of Megan to life. I really enjoyed listening to the story after I had read it.

BuyZombie.com recommends this book to anyone willing to read a very different zombie story. There is no apocalypse, just the end of Megan Berry’s social life.
