REVIEW: Asylum by: Mark Allan Gunnells

This wasn’t a bad story but it needed a little augmenting in my opinion. It was an average zombie story, and the premise was a little lackluster.

Premise: The elements of the nightclub could have been used to project more fear through the characters and to even establish a claustrophobic atmosphere. The beginning stages of the story where the zombies were just invading was good, but didn?t follow up very well.

He mentioned near the beginning that the zombies scaled the wall at the rear of the club. Zombies that could scale walls! I was thinking that this was going to be one hell of a action filled story when you have spider-man like zombies, but he never mentioned about the zombies athletic abilities after that incident. Why? He could have played upon that card very well, but he didn’t and it left the reader wanting more from the story. He tried to incorporate some tension throughout the story but a lot of it was cliché. The plot was cliché and didn’t deliver when the time called for it.

Characters: The characters in the story were well drawn, although I think he could have spent more time near the beginning of the story with character development. The dialogue backed up the characters very well and it presented clearly on the page.

Overall: This isn’t a bad read. The writing wasn?t too bad and it painted a nice picture of the story. A lot of the horror elements to this story failed to deliver in my opinion, and the zombies were almost a disconcerting element altogether. Characters were well presented but they needed a bit more interaction with the undead.

Overall, this isn’t a real great zombie story, its more of an erotic love story than anything else.
