Author Spotlight: Jeremy Bishop
Hello zombie fans! While the awesome zombie news expert Stuart Conover is taking a break by escaping on his honeymoon (I’m sure his newly married wife will whole heartedly approve) I had the opportunity to submit a guest post to highlight an exciting author in Stuart’s absence. Don’t worry, it’s S.C. approved. I wouldn’t dare think of hijacking the Buy Zombie site while he’s not looking…
The author that I’ve decided to highlight today is none other than self-starter independent phenomenon Jeremy Bishop who recently announced to the world that both he and the extraordinarily busy Jeremy Robinson are one in the same man. I’ve linked his blog post about “The Extravagant Life of an Author Exposed†for you, below, if you’re curious as to why the man personally blows my mind. Other than the fact that I enjoy his story telling, his time management and personal control of all aspects of his writing career is simply amazing.
Jeremy Bishop writes non-traditional style zombie novels. If you check out “Torment†and his newest release, “The Sentinelâ€, it’s clear that he writes character driven zombie genre fiction with a twist. What kind of twist? Of a fantastical sort. I guess you have to read the books to find out more because telling you that would ruin the surprise of reading them.
Some might argue that if they aren’t ‘traditional’ zombies, then is Jeremy really writing about ‘zombies’? Certainly, with the explosion of zombie interest on the scene, we’re seeing a lot of the same kinds of stories coming to light-which are all fun to read too, but some might comment that if you’ve read one zombie story, you’ve read them all (I certainly don’t believe that, but some people do). In my opinion, new original content is just as relevant to the zombie genre as any of the traditional ones. The stories add new blood to a crowded subject matter and allows the reader to explore different interpretations through the author’s voice.
Jeremy’s zombies are the walking deceased and still want to kill you; they’re just not really particular on the following the traditional details as long as someone ends up dying a grisly grueling death at their eagerly awaiting mouths. So to me that classifies as “zombie†though I’m sure traditionalists can and will disagree with me. I like all types as long as it entertains me.
Here are quick overviews of Jeremy Bishop’s books:
“Torment†is a dirty, grungy, dark look at a post-apocalyptic United States after a dangerous secret mission in Russia results in the rash launching of nuclear missiles upon United States soil. When the United States retaliates with deadly intent, a group of human survivors abandon Earth in escape rockets and come back in the aftermath for a shocking surprise. First, there are survivors of the nuclear fall out and second…they have turned into violently insane figures that intend to do bodily harm to the people who have come ‘home’.
“The Sentinel†is the name of the anti-whaling ship that Jane Harper boards for a special mission. When a bomb goes off on board and new allegiances are formed on a broken glacier in the middle of the Arctic Ocean, Jane is faced with the task of helping the survivors live long enough through bad weather and a dwindling food supply for a rescue. The task becomes even harder as animal life begins to attack the party and ancient Viking ruins proclaim that there is great evil beneath their very feet. And it’s about to be set loose. Taking this mission and boarding the ship has become the biggest mistake she’s made in her life as Jane struggles to keep everyone, including herself, alive against ancient zombies and Viking vampires.
So, if you’re looking for a little variation in your zombie reading, check out Jeremy Bishop. He’s a thrilling author and one of my favorite reads. You might enjoy his stories as well.
