Review: Day Of The Dead

Months ago, I finally watched the original Day of the dead. I know, I know, what zombie fan would go so long without watching the final instalment in the unholy trilogy? Well, I wanted to watch the original Day of the Dead for a while but things were constantly diverting me from watching it. Now I have finally seen it, and I have to say….JESUS CHRIST! Why the hell have I gone so long without watching this horror classic!?

The acting wasn’t bad. I felt the actress they could have used for Sarah was interchangeable, the role would have been better if it was Sigourney Weaver, but I doubt that could have been arranged. Joseph Pilato did a perfect portrayal of Captain Rhodes. Throughout the movie, I wanted to jump through the screen to jump at this guy myself; the actor did an excellent job of making viewers want to despise Rhodes. The actors who played as Dr. Ted Fisher and Private Steel were notably strong as well.
Some of my favourite scenes were Dr. Fisher’s experiments, mainly, BUB!

My favourite all time characters in zombie films are: Shaun (from Shaun of the Dead), Ed (from Shaun of the dead), Bub the zombie, Big daddy (the lead zombie from Land of the Dead) and Peter (from Dawn of the dead). I would have to give extra points to Bub and Big Daddy because they are zombies, and somehow, they were still personable and were received well by viewers. *SPOILER ALERT* Although, I might have to give extra points to Ed because he became a zombie eventually. *END SPOILER*

Day of the Dead was some pretty scary stuff.* SPOILER ALERT* I mean c’mon, did anybody else shit bricks when they saw Bub taking pot shots at Captain Rhodes with the pistol!? That scene alone made that entire movie. I didn’t think it was possible to make a zombie any scarier, but Romero did it. It was interesting, watching how Dr. Ted Fisher trained Bub the zombie and when Bub tried firing the empty gun at Rhodes, I laughed pretty hard. My favourite scene in the whole movie was when Bub saluted after he shot Rhodes. That is just pure genius! *END SPOILER*

Well, I don’t know if there is more to say…except…There’s a reason why Romero is the Grandfather of zombies. Even though it seems his latest projects haven’t been received well by most audiences, I will still watch any film Romero throws out there. It’s tough for Romero because viewers are comparing all his newer films to Day of the Dead, and I don’t think topping Day of the Dead is possible. And for god sakes, don’t watch the remake.

The remake of Day of the Dead (2008) is possibly the worst zombie movie I have ever seen. Well….I can’t say that. Flight of the Dead was pretty god-awful. The Day of the Dead brings you the great acting talent of…ermm… Nick Canon. Don’t applaud too loudly now. This movie was trying to pay homage to the original Day of the Dead (1985) but they did it pretty badly. One of the antagonists gets bitten and turns into a zombie, but he doesn’t eat people because he was a vegetarian before he turned, and that characteristic becomes a part of his un-life. A vegetarian zombie? Hmmm… That’s almost as bad as making zombies able to love. (Hint hint) I don’t think it matters if that’s a spoiler or not, because there’s nothing I can say that makes your experience with the movie any worse…there is no way in hell, that I can ruin the movie for you. At one point…zombies actually have superpowers. I think they should have renamed this “Zombspiderman….of the Dead”
