Fighting to Survive: As the World Dies is the second book in the As The World Dies trilogy by Rhiannon Frater. For those who didn’t read my The First Days Review let me just say that I absolutely loved the book. I know it’s a trilogy but one book is being released a season so your wait as you fly through the first two won’t be “horrible” as the three were already released these are just the ultimate editions of them. Seriously though If you haven’t picked it up I strongly suggest that you go run out and do so right now. If you don’t the terrorists zombies win.
Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way let’s move onto the story itself. In Fighting to Survive Rhiannon has crafted an amazingly well written sequel to an initial story that I couldn’t get enough of. We have the characters that survived from the first novel in a secure location trying to expand their safe haven and build a new future where they are safe from the walking dead. Our group of survivors, specifically the ones we are following in Jenni, Katie, Juan, and Travis are getting a bit backed up in their current safe location. As survivors start to trickle in or are picked up their living space is getting backed up.
Fortunately, hope is down the block. A freshly renovated hotel with generators is within spitting distance. While that seems great right off the bat there is a street full of zombies as well as undead in the hotel itself that will have to be taken care of before they can even think about moving in. While planning is taking time the rest of the survivors are getting restless. People are getting comfortable enough in the end of days being the norm that politics and petty bickering are starting to flare up.
On top of all of this there are two other things going on. Near the end of the last novel we found out there is a vigilante in the group disposing justice as he or she sees fit among the remainder of the living. If you do something that is immoral or wrong by their standards you had better be prepared to pay the price as that’ll mean your end. No one knows who it is but their brand of justice is final. The problem though is not really knowing what they may feel as wrong.
If not having to worry about someone judging your actions is enough to worry about someone else is watching the group. Someone who is sitting back, watching, and also raiding the countryside for supplies and survivors. They haven’t been making a move against the safe haven that is being built yet but it’s clearly only a matter of time and with the death they have been leaving among other groups of survivors it can’t be something that will end well.
It’s the second book in a trilogy and is just as quick of a read as the first one. If you’ve read the first book you are doing yourself a disfavor for not picking up the second one. A great read and one you won’t be able to help but get sucked into.
