Our Arisen: Mogadishu of the Dead Review

Book 2 of the Arisen series following Fortress Britain places Team Alpha on the John Kennedy super carrier. The carrier group or rather the Burke class support ship that is supporting the JFK as a full carrier group would tax the limited resources, is sailing towards the east coast of the United States. Their objective is to get to Chicago and retrieve vital information that may be or lead to a cure or vaccine for the zombie outbreak.

With a sharp eye for detail, the carrier in the aftermath of a ZA has been adjusted to meet the needs of the crew. Long gone are the fighters and helicopters stored in the hangar bay. That space is now used for indoor gardening to feed the smaller crew. The only aircraft left onboard is the C-2 ‘Greyhound’ or COD. What struck me as a bit odd, and this is just me, is that with all the space for aircraft below decks, all the fuel storage and aviation workshops, manufacturing and storage for parts, only one aircraft was left onboard? You’d think that given the circumstances, you’d want a couple of helicopters with a couple more for backup and spare parts.

Also onboard the carrier is the remnants of a MARSOC unit that will be the QRF for Alpha when they conduct their operation. Considering what they’re facing at the target site, the chosen method of insertion might seem suicidal. The plan is for the team to HAHO or High altitude, High Opening parachute drop over Chicago and attempt to land on the roof of the target site. As operations go, it’s difficult but not impossible. When the descent becomes a Charlie Foxtrot and the team is dispersed over parts of the city with only a few reaching the target, events transpire. Ali, the Delta sniper ends up on the ‘L’, injured but still in a good position to provide overwatch. However, others are not so lucky. Broken appendages, potentially wrenched backs and other sundry injuries slow down the team. In a city full of the infected and with millions of potential Foxtrot Novembers running around, this is not conducive for a positive mission outcome.

Some readers have commented on the improbability of a female Delta Force sniper. All I can say is this, SFOD-D or Special Forces Operational Detachment- Delta aka Delta Force employs a large number of females. It’s not known if these females are used strictly for administrative tasks but the rumors persist that some might be on operational teams. As to female snipers, I direct you to WW2 and the Soviets with their implementation of women in a sniper capacity. More recent, the IDF in Israel that employs women in that capacity. Even more recent, the notification that US Army Ranger School will now be open to females seeking that qualification. So, with Ali as the female sniper for Alpha Team, it’s not all that much of a stretch to envision.

The team finds what they’re looking for, sort of, and then attempts to exfil to their extraction site. But, the excrement has fully impacted the air displacement device as a group of apocalypse zealots have unleashed a captive zombie on the JFK and then set her full steam ahead towards the shoreline.
