Our ‘The Undead Haze’ Review

The Undead Haze is book 2 in the Cyrus V. Sinclair series. TUH picks up from the ending of the first book with Cyrus still searching for the love of his life, Blaze and travelling with Pickle, his ferret. For those of you who have read the first book you know that Cyrus is not exactly the average survivor. He’s more of a sociopath with no emotional attachment to anything but Pickle and candy.

The Undead Haze puts Cyrus into the clutches of a group of cannibals who view the zombie apocalypse as a smorgasbord. Captured by the Immortal Son, the leader of the cannibals, Cyrus must find a way to escape and continue his search for Blaze. Ever resourceful, Cyrus makes good his escape and takes refuge in a community college. There, suffering from a bout of sickness brought on by stress, lack of food and weather, he falls in and out of delirium and is visited by visions of Blaze both alive and undead. Reacting to a very vivid vision, he runs out into the quad of the college calling her name and encounters another survivor. In a strange twist, this survivor, Buford aka Beau, is also looking for someone, his sister.

As Cyrus slowly regains his health, the two of them decide to head to a small island in Puget Sound and seek shelter. The turning point for Cyrus is when he discovers that the other survivor is Blaze’s younger brother.

Encountering the Immortal Son and his followers while foraging for supplies, the two of them barely make their escape. Forced to continue on foot when their vehicle slides off the road and gets stuck in a ditch, they watch the cannibals drive past in a relatively well-organized group. Following the convoy in hopes of getting some weapons and ammunition, Beau, Blaze’s brother, gets captured along with Cyrus. Back in the hands of the cannibals, Cyrus is not a happy camper. Formulating a plan to escape, he steals a snowmobile and heads towards the island. During this escape, he runs into someone whom he had thought was long gone, Gabe.

Finally making it to a location where he can access watercraft, Cyrus makes it to the island only to discover that the religious leader who used his sway on the small community to get them to move to the island in the first place, has lost been deposed by the citizens and the island is in a state of turmoil. The undead and living are roaming the island all seeking a means of escape. At least the living are, the undead are just looking for their next meal. Does Cyrus find Blaze on the island? You’ll have to read The Undead Haze and find out.

The Undead Haze is a definite page turner. The unpredictable Cyrus V. Sinclair makes it all worthwhile. If you’ve read the first book in Eloise J. Knapp’s series, don’t miss this one.
