Some of our favorite characters wield katanas: Hiro in Snow Crash, Deadpool, Juan Sanchez Villa-Lobos Ramirez (you know… the chief metallurgist to King Charles V of Spain?) from Highlander, and Michonne fromThe Walking Dead. We love that her dramatic entrance in the television episodes is often announced by some problem being solved by having a katana stuck through it. The camera then pans back to reveal the wielder, despite the fact that we already shouted out her name in triumph. In a show with so much depth of character, it’s nice to have someone you can love pretty much unconditionally, which only works because we know so little about her in the TV show. She’s still awesome in the comic book series, but we know a lot more about her so she’s less the hero who rides in (literally) to save the day and more human. Personally, sometimes we need a little katana ex machina in our lives.
