Recently Neil Druckmann (Creative Director) and Bruce Straley (Game Director) of Naughty Dog sat down to talk about both The Last of Us and The Last of Us: Left Behind on an AMA (AskMe Anything) over at Reddit. There was some choice details included on the games as well as what the company is thinking on a possible sequel so I’l share the ones I liked the most below!
Anyone who has heard the music of the game could easily describe it as haunting, amazing, perfect. It was done by Gustavo Santaolalla who has never done a video game soundtrack before though is quite known for his work in other genres. When they were pitching the game to him how hard was it to get him on board?
Gustavo came on board right after hearing the pitch for the game. It was incredibly easy collaborating with him… didn’t have to give him much direction. His music was inspirational for the storytelling since we got some of it so early.
Another question asked if we’ll ever find out how the rest of the world is handling the outbreak? That would of course suggest more DLC or a sequel right there.
Probably not, but you never really know. if we can come up with a good story that fits into other locations, then we’ll certainly consider it. But in general we try to keep the perspective of the story told from the character’s perspective, so you certainly wouldn’t hear it from some government report… it could be inferred through gossip, but that’s just gossip… who knows??
Another question asked if there “ Will there still be a 3rd DLC for multiplayer? And if possible, any news on any TLOU2, or if you guys are still contemplating it?”
we’re working on the 3rd DLC drop for MP right now! …and maybe something else… we’ll see. 😉
That’s one hint right there about a sequel! At the very least there is a third DLC dropping for multi-player!!
If there is a sequel it probably wouldn’t have Joel and Ellie return. So is that the last of them?
I miss them dearly. I’d love to see them again — maybe in a different medium? We’ll see.
Is that a movie/cartoon/book/comic hint? Only time will tell but this is a game whose story is meant to be told outside of just a gaming platform!
Speaking of comics according to Neil:
I’d like to do another comic… several things would have to line up for that to happen.
So that one is a possibility in the future, if things line up!
There have been hints above about a sequel to the game but when asked directly about it we got the candid response of:
If you’re asking about a sequel… right now I’d say it’s 50/50.
SOOOoooo Maybe yes, Maybe no.
