When the apocalypse takes place and the zombies are roaming the land looking for their next snack, you will want to get away from the horrific bedlam as quickly and efficiently as possible. As Zombie Guide notes, an excellent way to escape the hordes of zombies wandering your neighborhood is on a dirt bike. In addition to the killer gas mileage, dirt bikes handle exceptionally well and can maneuver on all sorts of terrain.

Having said that, it’s important to make sure your dirt bike is well-equipped to handle the worst of whatever zombies are dishing out. With some forethought and preparation, you can transform the average dirt bike into a zombie-avoiding dirt bike of doom. For example:

Get more bang for your gas buck

As Rideapart notes gas stations are sure to be crazy-busy after the apocalypse, filled with panicked people trying to fill their SUVs and minivans. To avoid this situation as much as possible (and the uncool option of siphoning fuel from someone else) make sure your dirt bike has great fuel range. Most bikes have small tanks that will give you about 100 miles of driving time, which is not too impressive when the zombies are coming after you. Consider an aftermarket fuel tank with a higher volume, or even an auxiliary handlebar model from an online dirt bike store like MotoSport. Boosting your fuel carrying capability by even 5 gallons may make the difference between life and death.

Carry more gear

Yes, dirt bikes are zippy zombie-avoiding modes of transportation, but they don’t exactly carry a lot of stuff. Fortunately, it is pretty easy to add onto all that exposed frame. A bike shop can help you weld on gussets that will increase the amount of weight that your dirt bike can safely carry. Once the subframe is strengthened, your dirt bike will be better equipped to carry you and your supplies to safety.

Get better tires

To be sure your motorbike can handle both on and off-road driving with ease, consider changing the standard 80/20 rubber tires with a 50/50 or 40/60 tire. This will allow the bike to seamlessly transition from city street to dirt road to forest trail.

Keep extra parts on hand

Picture yourself driving along the road on your dirt bike, the zombies in your dust. Then, the worst happens — you pop a tire or another crucial part breaks. As Prepper Link notes, while fixing a dirt bike isn’t usually too involved of a process, you don’t want to be stuck out in the middle of nowhere. Stock up on dirt bike parts and tools for your particular make and model, and be sure to carry them in your luggage. This way, if you do breakdown, you’ll be ready.

Add protection pieces

If you end up crashing in your quest to flee the zombies, you want to equip your ride with aftermarket parts that will keep it protected and operational. For example, Barkbusters handguards can help to keep your hands and various levers safe from damage, and sturdy crash bars are also a good aftermarket add on that will protect your bike’s frame in the event of a crash.
