The United States’ power plants would shut down or trip within 24 hours without a continuous fuel supply, reports National Geographic. Unfortunately, this continuous supply is reliant on human help. However, when it comes to the zombie apocalypse, this could be both good and bad news.
On one hand, having no electricity means people can’t communicate with each other easily. On the other, it means you are prime for a blackout scenario that can better protect you from the undead and unwanted looters. But, there’s more to do than just wait for the grid to go out.
Choose Your Location Wisely
If you have more than one home, a vacation property or the ability to crash with someone else, be sure to choose your location wisely. For example, forts and prisons are built for defense and often are outfitted with fencing and lookout posts, making them a good location. But, jetting off to a remote island might be your best defense as long as the virus isn’t already affecting the living who will eventually become the undead.
There are a few other things to keep in mind when picking a location. Choose an overcast or dark area to help keep your home dark. A bright and sunny beach house with windows stretching across every room isn’t going to do you any favors when the undead wander by. Also, think about your proximity to food, water and weapons.
Update Your Doors
Head down to the local hardware store or salvage yard the moment you get a hint of the zombie apocalypse. The idea will be to not let any light from your home reach the outside and alert the undead to the fact that you’re lurking inside. Replace all your exterior doors with heavy steel if you can find it. If all else fails, replace ornate doors and windows with anything solid you can find. Also, replace your interior bedroom and closet doors with steel. If a zombie manages to get inside or intruders start to loot, this will give you added protection inside.
Retrofit Your Windows
Upgrade single windows to tempered glass with wrought-iron bars if possible. Bonus if you can put dark shutters on the outside of your home to close and cover your windows. Then, add another layer of protection by picking up some blackout or thermal curtains for the inside of your home. These will make sure that no light escapes your home during the blackout.
Have a Backup Plan
You’ve exhausted all of your possibilities. You made your house black as night, fortified it with steel doors and the zombies still took over when someone in your party went out looking for supplies. For this extreme case, have a backup plan in place to go where no zombies can go.

When trouble approaches, move into a completely sealed concrete block home where no one and nothing gets in or out, including the light. This place is impenetrable to zombies and would probably require a tank and some serious ammunition to break in.
