We’ve all seen the movies and TV shows about the zombie apocalypse, and each new breed of zombie is never exactly like any other; however, there is some real science behind these fictional depictions. When the zombie apocalypse does come—and let’s be honest, it will—there may be differences we have yet to anticipate.

You’ve stockpiled food, water, and all of the other necessary supplies to survive, but have you considered how you’ll keep the undead at bay? Or what will happen if you run out of supplies? When it finally comes time to batten down the hatches, here are a few ways to feel secure in the fact that you’ve taken the necessary steps to keep your home and family fully protected.

Good Fences Makes Good Neighbors

Not only do good fences make good neighbors, they make good zombie protection as well—especially in the event that your actual neighbors have fallen prey to zombified prowlers. Fences should be your first line of defense for protecting the zombie-free sanctuary you’ve managed to create. Electric fences prove useful in many cases, but if that’s outside of your budget, a good (and tall!) wall of chain-link or cinder blocks will work just as well.

Back-Up Emergency Generator

If “The Walking Dead” has taught us anything, it’s that entire cities can be turned in no time. Without municipal employees to manage and maintain the power grid, water systems, and other utilities, you may very well find yourself without electricity, water or gas—all necessary for survival. If you’re planning to stay put, many residential or commercial-duty all-weather generators can provide ample power.

Motion-Detecting Lights

In the event that your first line of defense fails, ensure that you’re aware of unwanted invaders before they become aware of you. Install motion-sensing lights on fences at the perimeter of your property, as well as near any weak points of your home such as first-floor windows and doors that haven’t been reinforced.

Many motion-sensing lights illuminate at least 70 feet away and at a radius of 240 degrees. Although you may fear that sudden bursts of bright light may alert even more zombies to your presence, all motion detectors can be set to stay on for a minimum of one minute. Preset your timer to allow enough time to survey the situation.

Quality Surveillance

Although it may seem extravagant, installing a high-quality surveillance system can go a long way in raising your home’s zombie survival ranking. HD surveillance cameras deliver true-to-life images and innovative surveillance systems can be found for any budget, any size home, and with additional security features such as night vision. These bonus features and high-quality images will allow you to accurately identify zombies, humans, and non-threatening intruders (i.e. animals) during any time of day.

Alternative Energy Sources

Generators are great, but they’re ultimately designed for short-term emergency preparedness situations. Upgrade your home’s energy source to solar or geothermal power (or a combination of both!) to ensure reliable, consistent energy output. Solar energy can be stored in batteries for future use, and if paired together, geothermal and solar will definitely keep your home comfortable throughout the seasons and the zombie invasion.

Whether the true zombies are fast, slow, able to breathe underwater and hungry for human flesh, these five practical pieces of home technology and security will give you confidence in your ability to survive.
