A zombie apocalypse can happen at any time, so you better be prepared. Make sure you know which tools are imperative for your survival so you can use them at a moment’s notice. Ensure your safety with a medley of survival essentials, transportation, weaponry and other crucial odds and ends. Stock up on certain things now to save your life later. There are also many everyday items you use, which may seem basic, that become more important when zombies abound. Here is a breakdown of everything you’ll need on the arrival of Z-day:

Survival Essentials

Food + Water

Food sources may become scarce — either blocked by zombies or contaminated with a virus. Stock up on non-perishable foods and canned goods in your home or emergency shelter. Your canned food should be full of protein so you can maintain energy in your pursuit of survival. Go for cans of beans, chili, fish and Spam. Also stock up on food that is easy to transport, such as protein bars or freeze-dried meals.

Clean water may also become a rare commodity, so a transportable water filter or purification pills are essential.

Clothing + Shelter

The clothing you wear should fully protect you from the elements. Avoid clothing made of cotton fibers, as it will absorb water and is difficult to dry. The damp and cold cotton material will be uncomfortable and increase your risk of hypothermia. Wear quick-dry clothes such as spandex Under Armour or wool.

Your shoes should be hiking-grade, but not too heavy. Just so long as your shoes have good traction and can survive a few rounds of zombie sprints, you’re all set.

Adequate shelter will also help protect you from the elements. Have some rope and tarps on hand so you can venture out of the zombie-infested villages and set up camp in a safer area.

Transportation + Weaponry

Your Vehicle

You’ll need transportation that can weather rough, unmaintained roads. Ditch the luxury sedan and opt for an all-terrain vehicle. A Trail Rated model of Jeep would be an excellent vehicle for the rough conditions. Purchase your SUV ahead of time and shop throughout the U.S. for the best deals.

You can be resourceful with this vehicle and utilize it as shelter or a zombie-ramming weapon.

Weapons

When you’re fighting off the shambling horror, there’s a wide variety of effective weapons. Guns are great for slowing down zombies from a distance. A shotgun is a solid firearm option, as it has a wide spread and can hit multiple zombies at once.

A pistol has a more direct shot, one that will more likely slow down a singular zombie. Hand-to-hand weapons, however, are the surest bet since zombies can be killed by decapitation. For up-close, lethal combat use chain saws, axes and shovels.

Odds + Ends

Keep yourself healthy, safe and ready for action with a myriad of tools. If there is an airborne virus that has caused the zombie outbreak, make sure you are equipped with a gas mask. A first aid kit is necessary in case you’re injured. You don’t want to be slowed down by your injury or risk any kind of viral infection that leads to your zombification.

As you’ll be in survival mode day and night, make sure you have an adequate light source. Utilize a solar-powered flashlight or headlamp that doesn’t require batteries.
