Bunkers are meant to give you a safe retreat from any potential harm. Having a secure space is incredibly important and worth the investment whether you are preparing for nuclear war, the zombie apocalypse or your crazy ex-lover to show up at your door.
Camouflage the Exterior
One way to avoid uninvited evening guests is to camouflage your bunker to not be seen at night. You can achieve this by blending into your surroundings using similar materials to the area in which your bunker sits. If you are located in the forest, cover your bunker in leaves or branches like you would if you were setting up a hunting blind. If you are in a more industrial area, paint your bunker with matte black paint so that it will not reflect light on the nights that there is a full moon.
Lights, Camera, Action
Install motion sensor lights around the perimeter of your bunker. Often times being caught in the spotlight is all it takes to deter a malicious intruder. They will feel like a deer in the headlights when the entire area lights up like a sporting arena. This will also disable their ability to hide. When the area is flooded with lights there are no shadows where intruders can hide. Night vision-enabled security cameras can also help.
Self Defense Tools
You can set yourself up for success by automating some of your self defense tools. Setting traps for those that don’t know the property or that do not share the bunker will have a hard time getting past things like a trip line or a remote control gun. You can set up trip wires to alert you of things that go bump in the night. You might get the most bang for your buck by placing them far enough away from your actual location to allow you enough time to prepare for what’s coming. Another option is to place a remote controlled gun near one of your security cameras. Once you get a good look at the intruder’s face and you decide you don’t like the look of them, shoot off a rubber pellet to send them yelping in the other direction. Nothing too harmful but a well-intentioned warning indeed.
Keep It Clean
In addition to guarding against human intruders, you’ll want to protect your bunker from germs and pests, especially if cockroaches truly are unaffected by nuclear fallout. Keep your bunker germ-free and make sure your food and water supplies aren’t compromised by hiring a trusted pest control service. Also be sure to stock the necessary provisions for sanitary living, such as disinfectant, plastic bags for waste management and a device for boiling water.
Communication Systems
Consider installing a communication speaker at the gate to your compound or bunker to allow for communication for those who you may be waiting on to rendezvous with you. In the wake of a zombie apocalypse, those mushed brained beings won’t be figuring out how to operate a radio. If your bunker is equipped with self defense tools, you also want to make sure that you are not injuring a potential survivor or person in need. Your ability to see them and differentiate them from zombie versus human will be difficult in the dark.
You can also set up loud speakers outside your bunker to notify intruders that you have seen them and you are aware of their presence. Depending on how merciful you are feeling, you can warn them to leave the premises before firing a warning shot with your remote controlled gun.
