REVIEW: Bum of the Dead

It’s true what they say; you have to enjoy the small things in life to get through some of your harshest days and I think Bum of the Dead really honors that saying. It honors that to a whole other level. This short zombie flick is about a bum who wants to light a cigarette up for a smoke but just can’t seem to shake the zombies that are after him. Little does he know, there is a massive zombie apocalypse right around the corner but that damn cigarette lighter just won’t work. It’s a very simple story but it was strangely fascinating. I guess it’s because it’s about one man’s quest for mundane happiness while being ignorant to everything around him.

I can’t help but think that this movie was somehow influenced by Zombieland in the sense that Tallahassee was searching all over creation for Twinkies, annihilating zombies that get in his way and the bum in this movie was shooting his way through zombies trying to light his cigarette. They both share the ideology that little things can give you happiness and they both seem to have a keen sense sight. I also can’t help but think Hobo With A Shotgun too because the bum grabs a gun from a dead police officer and goes on a bit of a shooting spree. Personally, I enjoyed it but what killed it for me was the CGI. A little too tacky but I understand it was all they had. I can definitely see a feature length film here.
